Critical infrastructure needs eyes in the sky
Energy facilities, ports and transport hubs are becoming more dependent on rapid situational awareness, and drones are increasingly being used to provide operators with faster overview, earlier verification and improved operational response.Critical infrastructure is expected to operate without interruption. At the same time, energy facilities, ports, transport hubs and telecom networks are becoming more connected, automated and dependent on real-time information.
When incidents occur, operators often need immediate situational awareness across large and complex areas. This is one of the reasons why Drone As First Responder (DFR) concepts are attracting growing interest across both public and private sectors.
Rather than deploying drones only after personnel arrive on scene, DFR enables remotely operated drones to launch rapidly from fixed locations and provide an immediate aerial overview within minutes. This can support faster verification of alarms, improved understanding of developing situations and better coordination between operators, emergency services and decision-makers.
For critical infrastructure operators, the applications are significant.
Drones can inspect power lines after storms, monitor industrial sites, support maritime operations and provide aerial visibility during incidents where human access may be difficult or unsafe. Thermal sensors, live video and automated flight paths allow operators to detect anomalies earlier and respond more effectively.
As infrastructure becomes more digitalized and interconnected, many organizations are now exploring how drones can strengthen operational readiness, maintenance and safety around critical infrastructure.
These are some of the topics that will be explored at IXES2026 – the INTERPOL Unmanned Expert Summit.
Authorities, industry leaders, technology providers and operational experts will come together to discuss how unmanned systems can support the protection and operation of critical infrastructure across air, land and maritime domains.
